Although satirically treated through the pages of Mission Earth, rampant drug abuse and environmental pollution were, in truth, of deep concern to L. Ron Hubbard. (In testament to that fact are the nearly twenty years he devoted to the development of an effective drug rehabilitation program and the means to rid the human body of environmental toxins.) In a lyrical expression of that concern stands “Treacherous Love” and “Marching Song of the Protesters.” The first, a wry description of opiate allure is self-explanatory. To “Marching Song of the Protesters,” however, it should be added that Edgar Winter’s recording of the song was later adopted as a marching anthem for the twentieth anniversary of Earth Day International, while proceeds from the single went for the benefit of the United Nations environmental cause.
