SUBWAY
In addition to those stories drawn from earlier adventures in Asia, the Caribbean and South Pacific, Ron was forever plunging into extreme situations in search of new fodder for his literary mill. Case in point was his research for the 1936-1937 Hell Job series, focusing upon the worlds most dangerous professions. In the name of such research, he variously scaled precarious heights with steeplejacks, explored the bottom of Puget Sound with deep-sea divers and stunted with daredevil pilots.
His adventure at the controls of a New York subway represented more of the same. For a possible story involving an underground tragedy, he found himself behind the throttle as, Hissing grinding, / Destiny thrust it / On its way.
