STREET ACCIDENT

The cab
Played
Hopscotch
With the poles.

The cabbie
Gnawed
A dead cigar

The man
Saws signs
With listless eyes.

The cab
Slid by
A halting
Bus.

In all
That clamor
How small
The sound.

In all
That crowd
Eyes
Only stared.

An Irish
Cop
Kept them away.

The ambulance
Swallowed
With
Satisfied clang.

The cabbie
Put
His card
Away.
And saw
Two upturned shoes.

The man
With listless eyes.
Again
Watched signs.
