A CLEVER MAN

A clever man –
Not me –
Was born on a purple spread
And learned at a tutor’s clerkly knee –
Not me –

A clever man –
Not me –
Took sheepskin at a proper school
Employment in the family –
Not me –

A clever man –
Not me –
Married a highly dowered bride
Got children and much property –
Not me –

A clever man –
Not me –
Minus boots with his family round
Died at comfortable seventy –
Not me.

A clever man –
Not me –
Tasted none of the bitter sins
Valued his placidity –
Not me!
