For all the pulps finally yielded in terms of memorable fiction, those who wrote for the likes of Argosy or Thrilling Adventures were not without complaints. Of particular irritation were constraining editorial policies. I am and have been for years a good craftsman, Ron very truthfully conceded, but the very things I possess such as originality and inventiveness are not tools to the magazine trade.
His point is well taken, and is actually echoed in the memoirs of several who wrote for the pulps which is not to suggest pulp authors and editors were routinely at odds; Ron himself counted several as truly close friends, even including the famously irascible science fiction editor, John W. Campbell, Jr. By the same token, however, his incisive Editors says much.
